I’ve only had Beethoven a little while, but I can’t stop smiling. He is so much fun! Beethoven is interested in and excited about everything. He’s crazy on the leash, but it’s not pulling, it’s because he can’t decide among the dozen lovely things he’d like to find out more about; the grass, the tree, that bug, your hand, oh—another hand, that bug again, and, oh goodness, are those shoelaces? He is just all over the place out of sheer joy.
He loved the car ride home, then we played in the yard with him a bit. He starts out chasing the ball, very excited, yes, yes, throw the ball, but then he gets distracted, loses sight of the ball, and then can’t find it. It’s quite humorous. My daughter gave him a bath right away when we came in, and she says he loves it, doesn’t try to escape or hide from the water.
I worked with him a little bit on training, just to see how he’d take it. He was doing “sit” with just a verbal command in only a few minutes. He’s really smart. The hard part is not getting him to understand the command, it’s just getting his attention in the first place and getting him to calm down enough to hear the command. I’m really looking forward to training this guy. I know it will be a different experience after a long, tiring walk.
He had dinner and went out to potty, and now he’s snoozing in his crate. He is lying upside down, belly up, both paws and his head crooked over to one side. He is literally snoring. It is so adorable I kind of want to wake him up and hug him. He fell asleep like a baby, fussy. My daughter and I were in her room talking, and Beethoven started whining and shifting position in his crate. At first I was ignoring him, but he kept it up. I was thinking that he must have to potty again, and just about to take him out, when he lay down, put his head down and fell asleep. It was exactly like a toddler having a fit about how not tired he is just before conking out. This puppy just makes me laugh!
Next day: Today he’s had two separate mile long walks, and he’s much calmer. The leash walking was a little better, because I ran with him for most of it. It seems as though when he’s moving fast enough the distractions just blur past. Still, every few minutes he stops and has to be coaxed to get moving again. But he’s learning—just moving in a straight line is an improvement!
He appears to be crate trained, no accidents in the crate or the house. We’re keeping a close eye on him in the house, though. He does put everything in his mouth, just like a toddler!
Oh, and he walked into the wall today. He was following me around, and I walked through the doorway. He was so busy looking up at me, that he just missed the doorway and walked right into the wall. Really, this guy is a lot of fun. He will bring you smiles and laughter.
