Elliot came to us from a very nice lady who was caring for him, along with Talbot and Nigel.  Elliot  is a mixture of Chihuahua and Jack Russel.  According to his caretaker, Elliot would do best in a home with no other dogs or cats as he can get grumpy with other dogs in his home.  From what his new foster has seen, Elliot would do fine with another small dog/cat in the home as long as they do not pester him all the time (at his age, Elliot does not like a playful pup in his face). Elliot loves to cuddle with a pillow and is very quiet and content when he is alone.  New owners should note that Elliot is not housebroken, and he is missing a few teeth (at 11+years, this is no biggie).  Elliot is a loveable, sweet senior who just wants to relax and cuddle.

Foster Update 8/9/14:

Appearance: Adorable! Tan/white, 12 pounds

Energy Level: Couch potato. If you are looking for a dog that wants to cuddle and be lazy all day, then this is the dog for you! He doesn't care for long walks; he just likes to go outside to do his business and come right back inside. He loves to be held. I live in an apartment on the 3rd floor, so we carry him up and down the stairs. He can walk up and down stairs, but he doesn't like to most of the time and I think it is uncomfortable for him. He goes right to bed whenever I want go to bed.

Food: He eats wet food twice a day (morning and evening). He hardly ever drinks water, so I have been adding a small amount of water to his food. I have been feeding him Little Caesars and he loves it, but he would probably eat other brands as well.

Adaptability: He seemed comfortable with us right away! He wanted to sleep in a crate his first night, but he has been sleeping in my bed since then. He follows us around and always wants to be near someone. We put him in his crate when we leave and he doesn't have any problems with it. So far, we haven't left him alone for more than 2-3 hours.

Behaviors: Super calm, and very well behaved dog! He is a little old man and just wants to hang out. He is wonderful about not begging for food and not trying to get in your face when you are eating, however, he will get it as soon as you leave the room, so be careful about leaving food out.

Human Social Skills: He is slightly territorial of me and our apartment (more so my bedroom), so whenever someone new comes in he barks a few times at first, but then calms down when he sees that the person is not a threat. He is very friendly and loves to be petted!

Animal Social Skills: We have a cat, and Elliot gets along with him 99% of the time. They usually leave each other alone and peacefully coexist. However, I would not leave the two of them alone in the same room without being watched just in case. He is fine with other dogs his size or smaller, but he aggressively barks at bigger dogs. I think he is trying to appear meaner than he is and assert his dominance. I have not let him get close to another big dog so I don't know what would actually happen. Think he woud do fine in a home with another small dog or cat as long as the family was home to watch them and ensure they had their space.  He would also be fine as the only animal in the house, meeting other small dogs on walks, etc.

Obedience: He usually responds to his name and "come," and we are working on "sit."

Training: He is house-broken and crate-trained. He had one accident the second day we had him, but he has been an angel since then. We take him outside about 4 times a day.

Personailty Quirks: Elliot is a sweet, little old man that wants to spend the rest of his years in peace. He absolutely loves cuddling and laps. He sometimes gets impatient if I am up and doing something, but then he settles down after a minute and naps by himself.

Ideal Home: I do not know how he is around kids, but he probably wouldn't like the high energy. I think he would do best with a single person, couple of any age, or family with older kids. Please consider Elliot for your home! You won't regret it! :)

Foster update 7/18/14:
Elliott loves to ride in the car but does not like walks. He needs to eat canned dog food and add alittle of water to it. Elliot does not drink alot of water. He got along very well with his foster's dog. Foster also said that Elliott was house broken.

According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Chihuahua is the oldest breed on the American continent and the smallest breed in the world. Native to Mexico, nonetheless it seems to have been introduced by the Chinese. It was only brought to Europe at the end of the nineteenth century. The Chihuahua is named after the Mexican state of Chihuahua where he was brought to the rest of the world by travelers. This breed is believed to have been sacred to the Pre-Columbian Indian nations. The Chihuahua is a popular, economical companion dog. Courageous, extremely lively, proud and enterprising, it gives and demands affection. Bold and saucy, it moves swiftly to avoid being stepped on. Chihuahua's are strong-willed, intensely loyal and become very attached to their owners, even to the point of jealousy. They like to lick their owner's faces. It is undeniably suspicious of people except for its owner. When strangers are present, it follows its owner's every move, keeping as close as possible. This breed may snap at teasing children, after all it is too tiny to get away. The Chihuahua must resort to his sharp teeth in self defense. It is not recommended for children. He can be noisy and may require patience to housebreak. Many owners simply paper train this breed. The Chihuahua hates the cold and may shiver, although this may be due to high metabolism as much as temperature or anxiety. It will tolerate and even appreciate a warm sweater on cooler days. They are good little dogs for apartment life. Although it is tempting to carry these dainty creatures about, they will keep fitter if taken for walks. A body harness is safer than a collar. Don't think that just because he is small he should be confined to a small space. Chihuahuas have a life expectancy of 15 or more years.
