About Kane the Playful Lab (VIDEO)

  • Microchipped: Yes
  • Housetrained: Yes
Kane came from a kill shelter. He is very energetic! He knows how to walk on a leash, but we are working on pulling. He's young, so he's curious and wants to sniff everything. He does very well in the car. You can't see it in the picture, but he does have tan markings. He loves going outside in the play group with his other dog friends.

Kane is a jumper. He's either part kangaroo or has springs in his feet, because he can easily go four feet up from a stand-still. We would recommend a fenced-in yard with at least a six foot fence.

Foster Update 4/13/14:
Kane is making lots of friends at the dog parks. Every once in a while he will run into one, usually an un-neutered male or a very large dog,  he just doesn't like and he will let them know this, so I always keep an eye on him when he first greets another dog.   He has a girlfriend named Penny at one dog park and Daisy at another.  He plays very gently with them.  At home, he is a lightning fast fly and spider killer, and is always scoping out the back yard for lizards.  Kane is not very vocal unless he hears something that needs investigating, and then he has a fearsome bark that should scare away any intruder. Kane continues to be a very fun and energetic dog.

Foster Update 2/19/14:
Kane has been with me for 10 days so far.  He is a very fun dog with lots of energy and likes to meet new people. He loves to run and jump.  He still tends to jump up on me when he gets really excited, like when I get home from work, but he has gotten much better.

Kane gets along well with the dogs at the dog park.
We were there for 2 hours on Saturday. He played with at least 20 other dogs. When I brought him to a friends’ house who has a new puppy, he was a little rough.  I don’t believe he has been socialized with very young dogs or very young children and doesn’t know to be extra gentle. He still likes to nip like a puppy. My next door neighbors’ kids always come over to play with Kane when they see us in the front yard. They are between nine and fourteen years of age.

Kane loves to play fetch outside and he loves to play tug of war and hide and seek with his rope toy inside the house. He has a toy monkey and will run around the house tossing it up in the air over and over. We went for a short bike ride yesterday and he did really well trotting beside the bike.

He is crate trained.  I don’t put him in the crate at night.  He sleeps on a blanket on the floor in the bedroom.  I trained Kane not to jump up on the counters and to stay off the couch with a firm ‘No’ and a squirt bottle.  He learns quickly. I’ve picked up the squirt bottle less than a dozen times since Kane has been here.

Kane walks well in the neighborhood on an ‘easy walk’ harness.  He is a little skittish when I walk him at night.  I’m not sure he is used to being outside after dark.  When we go for walks in the field behind my house I let him off the leash and he runs around like the wind, but never goes too far and he comes when called.

Kane has a chocolate milk mustache, but only on his right lip!

The ideal home for Kane would be one with either children who are at least 7 years old or a young canine playmate who is medium to large in size. He is a really great dog.

*** According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Labrador Retriever is a loving, affectionate, lovable, patient dog. Once known as the "St John's Dogs," the Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. Originally from Newfoundland, Canada the Labrador was trained to jump overboard into the icy waters to haul fisherman's nets to shore. Specimens were brought to England in the 1800's by English ships coming from Labrador, where the dog's fine retrieving instincts were honed and developed. One of the best family dogs and canine companions because of their gentle, loving disposition, the highly trainable Labrador also excels in drug detection, as a guide for the blind, and service dog for the disabled. The breed is also an outstanding obedience and field trial competitor. Highly intelligent, loyal, willing, and high-spirited. Lively and good-natured, they love to play, especially in water - for they love to swim. They have an excellent, reliable, temperament and are friendly, superb with children and equable with other dogs. They crave human attention and need to feel as though they are part of the family. Labs are easily trained. These dogs are watchdogs, not guard dogs, although some have been known to guard. They have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
