Mia is a very sweet loving dog. She had to be surrendered by her family, due to a change in the financial circumstances.

Foster Update 5/5/14:
Appearance- long, brindle, furry, 53 pounds,
Energy Level- low energy, lies down for most of the day, takes naps during the day, sleeps at night
Food- She eats 1 and 1/2 cups of dry food in the morning and at night.
Adaptability- It takes her some time to adapt to a new situation, but once she does, she is comfortable
Behaviors- She sometimes digs in the yard to get cool, her thick coat makes her warm outside, she barks when the doorbell is rung or when someone knocks
Human Social Skills- immediately friendly with females, children, elderly, etc. She loves kids! Wary of males at first, but after she warms up, she is comfortable
Animal Social skills- great with submissive dogs, gets skittish around high energy and boisterous dogs, she plays with our small Jack Russell in a friendly, playful way; not sure how she does with cats
Obedience- sit, stay, come, off, lie down
Training- completely house trained, she walks well (but is a slow runner that tires easily), she is treat motivated at home, but not at all in social situations
Personality Quirks- Mia is the most affectionate dog, she rubs on your leg to get you to pet her, then she gets playful and rolls on the ground with her mouth open like a puppy. She loves being pet on her bottom and on her belly. I have fallen asleep many times while cuddling/petting her on the floor, with her paw over my hand. She may look tough and masculine, but she is a gentle giant.
Ideal Home- Anyplace where someone will be home often, she loves to be near people. As long as someone is home, she will be a happy dog, she would love children too, She would not do well cooped up in a crate during the day, or left alone for most of the day. She is a great walking partner.

Here is what her owners had to say about her:

She loves to be kissed on the head, and the wagging of her tail will let you know how much she enjoys it. Patting her behind is something she also enjoys a lot, along with brushing and TLC--that's her thing.

She loves going for walks. She will wait and wait for you until you are ready. When she sees the leash, she will show you how eager she is to go explore. She is really good on teh leash and will follow you, and knows how to stay on the left. She doesn't go too far now, due to her age and especially if its too hot, but she digs exercise.

She is okay with getting her nails trimmed, and with shots and medication. She is very sweet and patient. We advise getting her shaved down in the summer.

She is fine with other dogs. She is never aggressive and is very good in a pack. She doesn't mind cats, but she doesn't want much to do with them. She will stay away, and then if they get too close, she will back off and doesn't want any part of it. She is great with kids. When she meets someone new, she will bark and let the person know "I'm checking you out" or "you are too close to my house." She takes her cues from you, so if you're calm, she will be too. She loves to be around you, even if she is doing nothing. Hanging out by the kitchen when you're in there is perfect for her. She will come and find you if she feels you're gone for too long. She will sleep very well on the floor if it is too hot, or just use her comfy dog bed--as long as it's near yours. A great family dog!

Mia qualifies for our Seniors For Seniors program! If adopted by a person 55 or over, her fee will be discounted.

Like many dogs in the South, Mia is heartworm positive but don't let that stop you from adopting a great dog. We are treating her with monthly heartworm preventative, our preferred method. Many heartworm positive dogs go on to lead long and healthy lives.

PRBJtreats ALL of our dogs with monthly Heartworm preventative. HW+ dogs are treated with the recommended slow method, using monthly HW preventative as it is gentler on the animal’s system than the more invasive, injection method. Most dogs that are Heartworm positive can lead healthy, normal lives if the disease is caught early and treatment began. There are different options to treat HW and new owners may choose to redirect their type of treatment with direction of their vet.All HW+ dogs have a HW slow treatment info sheet in their adoption folder which will be provided to new owners.

According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Akita is native to the island of Honshu in the region of Akita in Japan, where it has remained unchanged for centuries. Today, the Akita is considered the national dog of Japan and is designated as a Natural Monument. The breed has had many uses, first as an Imperial guard dog, then as a fighting dog, hunter of deer and bear, for sledding, and for police, army and guard work. The Akita has keen hunting abilities and can even hunt in deep snow. He has a soft mouth, so he is suitable for waterfowl retrieval. In Japan, small statues of the Akita are often sent to ill people to express a wish for their speedy recovery, and to parents of newborn children to symbolize health. The first Akita was brought to the USA by Helen Keller. American servicemen also brought Akitas to the US after World War II. The Akita is docile, but sometimes spontaneous. Careful and very affectionate with its family. Intelligent, courageous and fearless. It is very willful and needs firm training as a puppy. The Akita is a first class guard dog. Japanese mothers would often leave their children in the family Akita's care. They are extremely faithful and thrive on companionship. The Akita is very aggressive to other dogs and animals and should therefore never be allowed to run off its lead around other animals. It should definitely be supervised with other household pets and children. Although the breed may tolerate and be good with children from his own family, he may not accept other children. If teased, Akita's may bite. Children must be taught to treat these dogs with kindness. This breed can be very food-possessive and willful. They are capable of ferocity, but with firm training, can make a fine pet. Obedience training requires patience, as these dogs tend to get bored quickly. The Akita needs to be with its family. It vocalizes with many interesting sounds, but it is not an excessive barker. It has an expected life span of 10-12 years.
