About Carole the Big Ears Lab Blend

  • Microchipped: Yes
  • Housetrained: Yes
This beautiful girl was rescued from a high kill shelter.

Foster Update ~ February 2014:

Leash Manners – Carole walks well on a leash. We are still working on heel with her. She pulls slightly, but our Sporn Halter reduces that.

Socialization - Carole is great with both people and dogs. She loves to be petted by people and will even try to wiggle her 43 pound frame into your lap to help you pet her better. She loves playing with her sister Cassie. We brought our neighbor’s dog over who is about the same size and same energy level and they all played great together. Both Carole and Cassie love our older Aussie and will try to lick her. On walks, she will bark at other dogs, but is not aggressive. Carole gets along with cats. When the cat is walking around she will stand a few feet away and watch it with her ears perked. If the cat is on the couch, she will not bother it.

Energy Level and Exercise – Carole is an active dog. We walk her for 30 minutes 3-4 times a week. We recently took her to a dog park and she played extremely well with all of the other dogs regardless of their size.

Daily Structure and Schedule – Carole eats 2 cup of Taste of the Wild in the morning. When we are home, she has free run of the house and the backyard.  When we are away, she stays in her crate. We walk her in the evening whenever we are able. At around 5 pm she is fed 2 cups of Taste of the Wild with a fish oil supplement added in to help keep her coat shiny. At night she is kept in her crate.

Confidence Level – Carole is a confident dog. She hasn’t shown herself to be shy around people or other animals. She is slightly apprehensive about the vacuum cleaner but is otherwise confident as she wanders around the house and meets new people.

Obedience Training – Carole knows sit, wait, come,  paw, and how to use the doggie door. She is crate and house trained. If she whines in her crate, it is only in the morning when people begin waking up and moving around because she wants to be let out. When we feed her, we have her sit and wait while we put her food down until she is given the signal that it is ok to eat.

Personality – Carole is a lapdog. Or at least she thinks she is. She will try to get into your lap by first putting her front paws on your lap and then wriggling her back end up onto the couch. Carole likes to talk. She will make a funny bugle noise as if to announce who just came through the door or how happy she is to see you in the morning.

Ideal Home - An ideal home for Carole would be one with an active family. She does not need to have another canine companion as she gets a lot of enjoyment from being around her people. However she would make a good companion for another dog if a potential family has one.  A doggie door leading to a backyard with room to run would be ideal.

*** According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Labrador Retriever is a loving, affectionate, lovable, patient dog. Once known as the "St John's Dogs," the Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. Originally from Newfoundland, Canada the Labrador was trained to jump overboard into the icy waters to haul fisherman's nets to shore. Specimens were brought to England in the 1800's by English ships coming from Labrador, where the dog's fine retrieving instincts were honed and developed. One of the best family dogs and canine companions because of their gentle, loving disposition, the highly trainable Labrador also excels in drug detection, as a guide for the blind, and service dog for the disabled. The breed is also an outstanding obedience and field trial competitor. Highly intelligent, loyal, willing, and high-spirited. Lively and good-natured, they love to play, especially in water - for they love to swim. They have an excellent, reliable, temperament and are friendly, superb with children and equable with other dogs. They crave human attention and need to feel as though they are part of the family. Labs are easily trained. These dogs are watchdogs, not guard dogs, although some have been known to guard. They have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
