About Sallie the Black Lab Mix Puppy

  • Microchipped: Yes
  • Housetrained: Yes
I spent several hours with Sallie at the Rent A Paws event on 10/14/13. She was great around the other dogs, walked well on the leash, loved all of the attention she received, and in general was a very well behaved dog! She is very sweet!

**A HOME VISIT MAY BE REQUIRED PRIOR TO FINALIZING ADOPTION**

This beautiful little Lab/Whippet mix was abandoned with her littermates at a high kill shelter.

Appearance Sallie has a very soft, shiny black coat. Her fur is short and easy to take care of, and she does not shed a lot. In the true fashion of the whippet breed, she does not have an undercoat so would not tolerate very cold weather well.

Energy Level Sallie has moderate energy. loves to be around her people, and is very sweet and gentle. Sallie loves to play fetch and will chase a ball as much as you're willing to throw one. She makes a greating jogging or walking partner. Critical for Sallie, however, is rest. She needs her down time. She is not overly energetic and likes to lie around and sleep. She is a good cuddler. She does not like to be disturbed when she is resting and may nip if disturbed.

Food Sallie eats twice per day – a mixture of a high protein dry food with some Primal Freeze Dried Formula food mixed in.

Adaptability Sallie is great when meeting new people in the home, although if put in a situation where there are a lot of people or dogs, she can become fearful, and may growl or nip when very nervous. She is NOT aggressive, though, she is just shy and prefers a quiet home to a very active one. In a quiet home, she would make the absolutely perfect pet. Gaining her trust is important, but once that trust is gained, she is an absolute sweetheart, and she loves to give kisses and snuggle and be loved on. Anyone who takes the time to gain her trust and show her that she is safe, will be well rewarded for their efforts. Sallie needs her down time and quiet time, or she will get stressed out. She does not like to be bothered when she is sleeping.

Behaviors Sallie loves to chew on bones and stuffed toys. She will counter surf if left unattended, and she can jump. She is very graceful. She is very athletic and loves to chase a ball and run around the yard. She is also a good walking/jogging partner. She can jog at a slow to moderate pace for about a mile. She would make a great dog for someone who likes to walk, but does not or cannot walk extremely long distances. She is very easy to handle on the leash.

Animal Social Skills Sallie is submissive to other dogs and is typically submissive to them, although she can be fearful when meeting new dogs so a proper introduction is critical. With a proper introduction and supervision, she can fall in with a pack, and she loves to play once she gets comfortable.

Obedience Sallie knows sit, wait, down and off.

Training Sallie is housetrained and crate trained, although she does not really like the crate and will sometimes bark when crated if she knes you are home. In most homes, I would not think that a crate would even be necessary for her once she got settled into a routine with her new family..

Personality Quirks Sallie has a sweet face and the kindest eyes. She always looks like she is smiling and is a very happy dog. She listens well and is eager to please.

Ideal Home Sallie needs a quiet home that is not filled with constant activity. A home with kids or even teenagers would not be recommended, as there is too much going on. A single person or a couple would be ideal. She should also go to a home with an experienced dog owner to prevent her from developing fear aggression. Moderate exercise would be perfect for her. A fenced yard woule be ideal.

*** According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Labrador Retriever is a loving, affectionate, lovable, patient dog. Once known as the "St John's Dogs," the Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. Originally from Newfoundland, Canada the Labrador was trained to jump overboard into the icy waters to haul fisherman's nets to shore. Specimens were brought to England in the 1800's by English ships coming from Labrador, where the dog's fine retrieving instincts were honed and developed. One of the best family dogs and canine companions because of their gentle, loving disposition, the highly trainable Labrador also excels in drug detection, as a guide for the blind, and service dog for the disabled. The breed is also an outstanding obedience and field trial competitor. Highly intelligent, loyal, willing, and high-spirited. Lively and good-natured, they love to play, especially in water - for they love to swim. They have an excellent, reliable, temperament and are friendly, superb with children and equable with other dogs. They crave human attention and need to feel as though they are part of the family. Labs are easily trained. These dogs are watchdogs, not guard dogs, although some have been known to guard. They have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.

******According to dogbreedinof.com, the Whippet is intelligent, lively, affectionate, sweet and docile. This very devoted companion is quiet and calm in the home. The Whippet should never be roughly trained, for it is extremely sensitive, both physically and mentally. Be sure to introduce plenty of variety during training. The best results will be achieved by including games and running. These dogs are good with children of all ages as long as the children do not roughhouse or tease the dog. Whippets are clean, virtually odor free, easy to care for and easy to travel with. They are good watchdogs and may be reserved with strangers. They will pursue and kill cats and other small animals if given the opportunity, but are good with other dogs. Household cats that they are raised with and have become accustom to will be left alone. They can be used to hunt. The Whippet's sweet personality makes him a fine companion dog. The Whippet is the ultimate sprinter, unsurpassed by any other breed in its ability to accelerate to top speed and to twist and turn with matchless dexterity. Some can be difficult to housebreak while others housebreak quickly. Make sure you are this dog's firm, confident, consistent pack leader to avoid Small Dog Syndrome and behavior problems. Always remember, dogs are canines, not humans. Be sure to meet their natural instincts as animals.
